In this article bus drivers are being accused of being racist because they drive by Muslim students without stopping for them. This issue is happening in England at West Derby’s Holly Lodge Girls’ College in Merseyside, where 10 percent of the 11,274 students 11-18 years of age are from ethnic minorities. Apparently, the bus drivers are trying to avoid another problem. When the Muslim children get onto the bus they are harassed and bullied because of the stuff they wear such as their traditional veil that covers their head, called a hijab. The Muslim students made a complaint about being harassed on the school bus, and police officers are now being put on busses to make sure that the children do not get bullied. The Muslim children think that the bus drivers are ignoring them just because they are Muslim. In my opinion, the bus drivers are doing them a favor by keeping them off the bus and safe from other children. It doesn’t seem fair, and I can see why the girls would think that it’s not fair. However, in reality the bus drivers are doing nothing but keeping them out of harms way. As of March 7, 2010, police where drafted to be put on busses to stop the racial harassment against Muslims. I could not find any more recent articles on the issue, but I will keep you posted.
