This article, “Jena Sheriff Seeks Revenge for Civil Rights Protests” is about a sherrif in Jena, Louisiana named Scott Franklin who was leading a mobilization called “Operation Third Option.” According to the sheriff, there are three options for drug dealers: one is to stop doing it immediately, the second option is to move away from it, and the third option is to spend the rest of their lives in prison. The sheriff called the mobilization “Operation Third Option” because he said no one was going to get away. Sheriff Franklin said “They will get put in handcuffs, put behind bars today and never see the light of day again unless they are going out on the playground in prison.” This mobilization consisted of more than 150 police officers. Sheriff Franklin told the police that they would be doing a major drug bust. This mobilization also targeted the black community.
One woman awoke to a gun pointed at her face with police filling up her house. The police were also pointing guns at her children and would not allow the woman to comfort her own children. No drugs were found in her house. The police thought they found a bag of marijuana in her kitchen but it turned out to be broccoli stems from her dinner the previous night. Others were abused by police and embarrassed by them. A man was tasered three times and put outside with no clothes on, since he was sleeping naked. I think that all of this is just absolutely absurd. No one should be treated like this even if they are a drug dealer.
I think that the title of the article describes exactly what happened in this situation. The sheriff did not like the results and mass protests of the Jena Six case and he decided he wanted to get back at the black community by basically humiliating them and physically abusing them.
